Computer History Of Operating Systems
The operating system of every computer is a software component which helps in managing various computer processes and to share resources of the computer. Operating systems hosts the computer applications and manages the hardware of the computer. There are various types of operating systems. However, let us have a look at the history of how the operating systems for computers evolved. |
The year 1954 saw MIT coming up with their operating system for UNIVAC 1103 and a decade later in 1964 Dartmouth timesharing operating system was created. A year later in 1965 Multics was announced but it was given to paid customers only in October 1969. Operating systems like DOS/ 360 of IBM came in the year 1966 and the year 1969 saw the launch of Unix by AT&T. A few years down the line, in 1976, the CP/M was developed and OS-9 was created in the year 1980.
The major development of MS-DOS took place in the year 1981 when IBM hired Bill Gates and Paul Allen to develop the operating system and Macintosh came up after another 3 years in 1984. MINIX, BSD2000 and OS/2 were developed in 1987 and other operating systems such as RISC iX, LynxOS and Macintosh OS (System 6) came through in 1988. The last year of the 1980s saw the development of the RISC system in 1989. The 1980s was a fruitful year in the development of operating systems and the 1990s was far better. Linux, Solaris, Windows NT 3.1, Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 and Solaris 7, were all developed in the 1990s respectively.
The Millennium saw the launch of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP service pack 1, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista and Linux 3 were all developed.
