Statistics is that branch of math which deals with collection, analysis, interpretation, explanation or presentation of data. In short, it is need to analyze data of all sorts quantitatively. There are different statistical tools such as graphs and survey sample methods which make it easy to relate data samples. |
There are many different branches of statistics. Descriptive statistics uses different methods to describe a collection of data. This is required in cases such as experiments done in research. Inferential statistics is used to study a process or a population. Using this, predictions can be made to decide the further course of study. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics together make up applied statistics. There is also another branch. It is called mathematical statistics, which deals with the theory of the subject.
Computer science and statistics have had effects on each other. Before the advent of computing, mostly linear models of statistics were prevalent. However, since the latter half of the twentieth century, there have been only nonlinear models. With suitable algorithms, there has also been the development of new models such as generalized linear models and multilevel models.
There have also been other changes. Based on resampling, computationally-intensive methods such as permutation tests and the bootstrap have become common. At the same time, Gibbs sampling has been made possible wit the use of Bayesian models. With computing and statistics going side by side, new branches such as experimental and empirical statistics have also developed. Many statistical software have also been made available.
