Who Buys Old Computer Hardware ?
With the innumerous developments and advancements in the field of computer technology, it is very often that computer hardware becomes obsolete. The people often go for new hardware discarding the old ones they have. However, one has to be very careful while discarding old hardware as it can lead to being an environmental hazard as well as a cause of human health concern. |
One option in discarding old hardware is recycling it. There are many organizations in America which help in recycling computer hardware. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is one governmental organization that provides assistance and assessment of computer recycling. Similarly there are other outfits like the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool system or the EPEAT which helps buyers assess the environmental impact of old hardware. This is a division of the Green Electronic Council.
While these may be viable options for some organizations, it is just easy to donate to a school or church. These are tax-exempt organizations to which donating helps maintain the Corporate Social Responsibility of the organization. However, some organizations have concerns about donating old computers. It is considered prudent to be careful about the corporate data that may be inadvertently transferred.
There are still other options that one can look out for. The online auction store eBay is always there, where old computer hardware can be sold. Otherwise, you can try placing ads in the local newspaper or the yellow pages. There are always the local computer vendors who are ready to shell out money; of course not as much as you bought the PC for, but a good amount for the old hardware.
