How Place Switch Between Cable Modem And Wireless Router ?

If you have a home based network where one or more computers are sharing an internet connection, then you definitely need to have a router and a cable modem for the access, in order to share the connection. However, in order to make your network safe, one of the most convenient and sensible options is to use a switch between your cable modem and the router.

Most people prefer to have wireless routers to cut down the usage of cables. When you place a switch between the cable modem and the wireless connection, you are stepping up the security and also adding an additional layer of protection for all the computers on the network. There are hundreds of threats on the internet and since the cable modem will keep all the computers in the network on the internet 24 hours a day, it is advised strongly to step up the security.

In order to place a switch, you will need two Ethernet cables. You will need to connect the Ethernet cable into the jack behind the cable modem. This jack looks much different from the jack used for the telephone line. It is wider and bigger. On the router there will be more than one jack for the Ethernet cables. They will also be numbered and usually most home based routers have up to four jacks. Do not plug into the LAN is it is for internal network. Plug in the Ethernet cable into the numbered jack. Connect one more Ethernet cable into the cable modem and connect to the jack called WAN or WLAAN on the wireless router. Your switch is reedy to be used.
