The motherboard will also have a flat black chip called the processor which is usually located in the middle of it. If your computer is not starting no matter what you try, then it is a good idea to test the motherboard because obviously it is not receiving or transmitting any signals. If your computer starts, it means that the motherboard is working.
In order to test the motherboard, there are several free testing software available on the internet. This software will perform a series of tests on the motherboard when you use it. In order to get started, you will need to replace the CMOS battery. Thereafter, when you switch on the computer, make sure you first set up the BIOS configuration accordingly. Before you change anything, write down all the BIOS settings on a piece of paper. Remove most of the cards and peripherals attached to the motherboard like game and video controllers or sound card devices. You will need to take out the RAM and the processor also. Now check the motherboard for chips and jumper caps. Fix them firmly if they are loose. Now switch on the computer and see if it is giving any messages or errors.
