Criminal forensics is that branch of law which uses scientific tools to investigate cases. Criminal forensics and computer programming come together in a branch of study called computer forensics. The aim of this study is to determine the current existence of a digital artifact. The name digital artifact can include a computer storage system, an electronic document or even information moving in packets across a computer network. The storage system can include a hard disk, a CD-ROM and so on. And, electronic documents may be and email, an image and so on.
This study is essential in many cases; especially those of a legal nature. Sometimes, in legal cases it may be necessary to scrutinize the computer or any electronic information of the accused. Even in cases of forgery, bank robbery also it may be required to determine how the robbers, hackers gained access to the network of the organization. In such cases, this study of computer forensics is extremely helpful.
Computer forensics can also be divided into different branches such as firewall forensics, network forensics, database forensics and mobile device forensics. Related disciplines include-forensic engineering, forensic linguistics, Forensic materials engineering, forensic polymer engineering and others as well.
The computer forensic process involves five parts. They are: preparation, collection of the data, examination, and analysis and reporting. There are many examples of cases throughout history, where this branch of study has been used.
